The New Alpine A290

Is the Alpine A290 a Genuine Hot Hatch and Renault 5 GT Turbo, or Williams Clio Successor?

Alpine is charging into the electric era with the A290, claiming it’s a hot hatch that's as thrilling as it is eco-friendly.

For a modern car, it’s compact, agile, and packed with performance. They say the A290 inherits the beloved driving sensations of the A110 but in an urban, electric package.

Thanks to its widened track and compact dimensions, the A290 boasts a muscular look.

Distinctive X-shaped lights and sleek design elements make it unmistakable on what’s a fundamentally good-looking car, in my opinion.

Inside, it’s all about sporty luxury, with Nappa leather and high-tech features like a 10.1-inch central screen angled towards the driver.

Performance is key, with up to 220 bhp and a 0 to 60 time of about six and a half seconds. And they say it has fine-tuned handling for everyday and high-speed thrills.

Innovative tech, such as the Overtake button, four driving modes, and Alpine Torque Technology, enhances the driving experience.

But I’m not sure it’s a true hot hatch icon, like previous Renault cars have been; ask a Clio 182 Trophy or R26.R owner.

The A290 has a 52 kWh battery that offers about 200 miles of range in the real world and fast charging capabilities, so it’s reasonably practical.

However, I have a feeling a spirited drive may reduce that to under 150 miles.

But I’m a petrolhead, so I’m yet to be convinced the A290 is Alpine’s electrifying leap into the future of hot hatches.
